The City
Kushinagar is located in Deoria district of eastern Uttar Pradesh. After a life dedicated to preaching mankind to improve sufferings and the path of attaining salvation, Lord Buddha had died at Kushinagar on his way from Rajgir to Sravasti. The incident is called Parinirvana in Buddhist parlance. His last words before death were that all compound things decay. Kushinagar has been a pilgrimage destination from many hundred years. It was also the capital of the kingdom of the Mallas, one of the 16 Janapadas in the ancient period. Most of its Stupas and Viharas were built in 230 BC- 413 AD, when the Kushinagar was extremely affluent.
Attractions in the City
Mahaparinirvana Temple :
The most important place to visit in Kushinagar is the Mahaparinirvana temple. The magnificent statue is 20-feet-long and is placed on a brick platform. There are remains of as many as eight monasteries around the temple. Some of these monasteries like the Makutabandhara Vihara are believed to have been built by Malla kings to maintain the relics of the Buddha.
Nirvana Stupa :
Situated 1 km from west of the Mukta bandhana Stupa, Nirvana Stupa was built during the reign of Ashoka. The stupa was luxuriously renovated in 1927 by the Burmese Buddhists. This Stupa also has images of the Buddha and is most visited in large numbers.
Muktabandhana Stupa :
The Muktabandhana Vihara is believed to have been built by the Mallas very soon after the death of Buddha. It is important to mark that the stupa has been built right over the sacred relics of the Buddha himself. Also known as the Ramabhar Stupa, it is a 50 feet tall structure. As the Stupa is believed to be the place of cremation of the Buddha, devotees throng the Stupa all round the year to seek out divine blessings.
Matha Kuar Shrine :
Made out of a single slab of stone, it is the huge statue of Lord Buddha. It depicts Buddha meditating under the Bodhi Tree in the "Bhumi Sparsh Mudra" (sitting posture where one hand touches the earth). There are also the inscriptions on the statue, which are extremely ancient.
