Climate
Periyar region’s average temperature ranges from 15 ° to 31 ° C with April and May as the hottest months. From June to August, monsoon rules over the place with heavy rainfall.
October and June are the best months to visit this sanctuary.

The Park
This beautiful Periyar Sanctuary is located in the hilly ranges of Western Ghats in the scenic state of Kerala. A lake that runs through the sanctuary is the main source of water for its wildlife. This lake was created after building of a dam in 1895.
Elephant rides are the means of exploring the interiors of the sanctuary. Although Periyar is essentially a Tiger Reserve, the huge elephants make the major attraction of this place.

Attractions in the Park

Flora : Tropical evergreen forests constitute the vegetation of this sanctuary apart from the semi-evergreen forest in some parts. The areas near the lake consist of marshy grasslands. There is one outstanding feature of the trees at Periyar, that there are some trees, which grow as high as 130-140 feet.

Fauna : As mentioned above, Elephants that are found abundantly in this sanctuary are the major attraction of this place. One can also witness other animals such as Gaur, Wild Pigs, Sambar, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer, and Indian Wild Dog. Since the sanctuary is mainly a Tiger reserve, there are around 40 tigers here. However, tigers cannot be easily seen in this place. Rare lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri Langur, Common Langur and Bonnet Macaque are the 4 species of primates dwelling in the park. Python, Cobra and the Monitor Lizard are the main reptile species found here out of which the Monitor Lizard can be spotted most freely.

Avifauna : The sanctuary is home to a number of local and migratory birds. The various species that can be seen commonly are Darters, Cormorants, Kingfishers, the great Malabar Hornbill, and racket-tailed Drongoes. During the winter season, it is a pleasure to watch the frolicsome migratory birds.

Other Places to Visit

Kumily :It is a small but scenic town 4 kms away from Periyar Sanctuary. Spice trade makes this place famous throughout India. Since it is one of the tourist attractions in Kerela, Kumily has some splendid hotels and resorts for stay.

Cradomom Hills : Cradomom hills give you an extremely splendid scenario to watch. From the reaches of these hills, tourists love to see the lower landscapes. To reach the hills you can take jeeps and taxis which are easily available.

How To Reach

By Air : The Madurai domestic airport of Tamil Nadu is 140 kms away from the sanctuary. The International Cochin airport is 200 kms from the sanctuary. These are the only 2 nearest airports to the sanctuary.

By Rail : Kottayam railway station is at the distance of 114 Kms from Periyar.

By Road : Thekkady is the entrance of the park. It is easily accessible. The road conditions are good and the rental taxis are easily available for hiring.
